The Indian Stamp(Tripura fifth Amendment) Act 2020

The Indian Stamp(Tripura fifth Amendment) Act 2020 is an Act of the Parliament of India that amends the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 in its application to the state of Tripura. The Act was passed on September 24, 2020, and came into force on November 13, 2020.

The Act makes a number of changes to the stamp duty rates and procedures in Tripura. Some of the key changes include:

  • Increasing the stamp duty on adoption deeds from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000.
  • Increasing the stamp duty on affidavits made as a condition of enlistment under the Army Act from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100.
  • Introducing a new stamp duty of Rs. 1,000 for instruments of loan or debt repayable not more than three months from the date of the instrument.
  • Exempting from stamp duty instruments executed by a person who is illiterate or unable to read or write.

The Act also makes changes to the procedures for registering instruments and filing affidavits. For example, the Act requires that all instruments and affidavits be registered with the Sub-Registrar within 30 days of their execution.
