A marriage which has already been solemnized can be registered either under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable in cases where both husband and wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs or where they have converted into any of these religions. Where either of the husband or wife or both are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

Eligibility for a Marriage Certificate in Delhi

  • The minimum age of the bride is 18 years and the groom is 21 years respectively. 
  • The wedding should have been solemnized in the state of Delhi.
  • At the time of marriage registration, there should not be more than one spouse for the groom or the bride. 

What documents are required for getting a Marriage Certificate?

The following documents are required to get a marriage certificate in Delhi,

  1. Identity Proof for Bride/Groom/Witnesses (only one proof is needed) (self attested)
    1. Aadhaar Card
    2. PAN Card
    3. Voter ID Card
    4. Passport
    5. Ration Card with Photograph
    6. Driving License
    7. Any Govt. recognized document
  2. Address Proofs After and Before Marriage of both Bride and Groom (only proof is needed) (self attested)
    1. Aadhaar Card
    2. Passport
    3. Bank Passbook
    4. Telephone Bill(Landline or Postpaid)
    5. Voter ID card
    6. Ration Card
    7. Electricity Bill
    8. Gas Bill
    9. Driving License
    10. Rent Agreement(Registered)
    11. Water Bill
    12. Any Govt. Recognized Document.
  3. Delhi Address Proof of both the Witnesses (only one proof is needed) (self attested)
    1. Aadhaar Card
    2. Passport
    3. Bank Passbook
    4. Telephone Bill(Landline or Postpaid)
    5. Voter ID card
    6. Ration Card
    7. Electricity Bill
    8. Gas Bill
    9. Driving License
    10. Rent Agreement(Registered)
    11. Water Bill
    12. Any Govt. Recognized Document.
  4. Identification Proof of the Marriage by the Witnesses (witness should be any officer/official of central or state governments or Union Territory Administration of PSU/autonomous bodies whose identity can be established or by any person having PAN of Income Tax)
  5. Passport size photograph of both the parties (2 copies each) and their Ceremonial photographs duly attested by any officer official of central or state governments or Union Territory Administration of PSU/autonomous bodies whose identity can be established or by any person having PAN of Income Tax.
  6. Separate affidavits in prescribed format from Husband & Wife giving:- (only Hindu Marriage affidavit is included in this form) (It has to be notarized and should be on Rs. 10/- Non-judicial e-stamp paper)
    1. Date and place of marriage.
    2. Date of Birth.
    3. Marital status at the time of marriage.
    4. Affirmation that the parties are not related to each other within the prohibited degree of relationship as per Hindu Marriage Act 
    5. Citizenship.
  7. Self attested Marriage Invitation card, if available.
  8. Attested copy of divorce decree/order in case of a divorce and death certificate of spouse in case of widow/widower.
  9. Where marriage has been solemnized at a religious place, a certificate from the priest is required.
  10. In case of a foreign national, a certificate from the Embassy concerned regarding his or her present marital status.
  11. In case one of the parties belong to other than Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh religions, a conversion certificate from the priest who solemnized the marriage is required.

Where to go to submit a Marriage Registration Application and at what time?

You have to go to the office of Sub-Divisional Magistrate in whose jurisdiction marriage took place, from 9.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on any working day.

All the documents are verified by the SDM office and a date is fixed. On the fixed date both the bride and groom along with the witnesses have to be present before the SDM. The Certificate is issued on the same day.
