A death certificate is a legal document issued by the government stating the proof of death of an individual being. It identifies the sex, age of deceased and cause, proof, place and time of death. The death certificate is registered under the registration of death act 1969.

According to this act, it is mandatory for every death to be registered. A death certificate can be issued by the government which needs to be formulated within 21 days after the death. In case of late registration, special permission can be asked for along with a fee.
In case the death is registered after 30 days, a late fee of ₹2 and penalty of ₹5 will be charged. If the death is delayed by a year, then the fee will be ₹10 and the penalty ₹25.
