Transfer of ownership of a bike from one person to another can be a tedious task and requires a lot of complex procedures. The involvement of the broker for the same can be heavy on your pocket. This blog will help you in transferring the RC of bikes online without the help of any intermediary.

The Registration Certificate or RC of your vehicle is an official document that proves your vehicle is registered with the Indian Government. It provides information about the territory boundary in which the bike can be used, engine, and chassis number, fuel used and specifies the category of the vehicle. Just like a driving license is necessary for a person owning a bike, all bike owners must have a valid RC to drive the bike on Indian roads as per the Motor Vehicle Act.

Types of Transfer of RC of a bike

There are three types of transfer of RC of a bike:

Transfer of RC in case of normal size

When the second-hand bike is sold, the name of the buyer is noted as the registered owner in place of the previous registered owner, and this process is known as the transfer of ownership in case of a standard purchase or normal size.

Transfer of RC on the death of the owner of a bike

When the registered owner of the bike dies, the ownership is affected in favor of his legal heirs. The legal heir can use the vehicle for 3 months as if it has been transferred to them but must inform the registering authority about the death of the owner within 30 days of such death and his intention to use the vehicle.

Transfer of RC of bike purchases in public auction

When the bike is sold in a public auction, the name of the buyer is noted as the registered owner in place of the previous registered owner, and this process is known as the transfer of ownership of an auctioned bike.

What is the procedure for transferring RC of bikes online?

For transfer of ownership of bike online, you should take the following steps:

  1. Go to the website eSahayak.io and search for RC Transfer.
  2. Choose the option of states from the Dropdown menu. After choosing the state, you have to fill the form.
  3. On an application form fill in the following details: Owner’s name, the purpose of transfer of ownership (sale/auction/inheritance), Ownership Type, Sale amount, Sale date, address details, insurance details, fee panel, etc.
  4. After that you have to pay a small fee to eSahayak for complete RC Transfer File creation.
  5. Then you have to visit your RTO to submit the documents and to pay the government fees.

What are the documents required for the transfer of ownership of the bike?

A person should carry the following documents to the RTO while transferring an RC of the bike:

  1. Mandatory documents: These are the important documents that would be required in all cases of purchasing a second-hand bike. The mandatory documents are as follows:
  • Certificate of Registration: It is the document given by the seller to the buyer of the bike that confirms and endorses the fact that the bike is the property of the seller, hence, it is a compulsory document that is required while transferring an RC of the bike.Pollution
  • Certificate or PUC: It is a document that approves an emission from your bike is under control and as per the pollution norms.
  • Certificate of Insurance: The seller is required to hand over the insurance certificate of the bike to the buyer. As per the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, an insurance cover must be bought and the policy would be in the name of the seller. Such an insurance policy must be transferred in the name of the buyer and for that certificate of insurance is required. Also, the seller has to inform the buyer that after the sale of the bike, the insurance cover can be transferred in the name of the buyer.
  1. Other documents: Apart from the mandatory documents, other documents are required to be submitted while transferring an RC of a bike.
  • In case of standard purchase and sale of second-hand bike: When a bike is purchased under normal circumstances, the following documents are required to be submitted:
  • No Objection Certificate has been provided under Form 29 and has to be filled and signed by the seller of the bike.
  • No Objection Certificate from the RTO in case a bike is sold within the same state. If it is transported from a different state, then NOC of the entry tax for that state. The bike should not be more than 30 months old while transported from another state.
  • Original RC book of the bike.
  • Receipts of road tax paid on the bike.
  • Tax clearance certificate.  
  • PAN Card of both Seller and Buyer.
  • Residential proof of both Seller and Buyer.
  • Proof of Date of Birth of Seller and Buyer.
  • Passport-sized photograph of the seller.
  • A No Objection Certificate from the lender if a bike is bought through a loan and the loan amount has not been fully paid off at the time of the sale of a bike. This NOC is issued from a bank or a financial institution from where the loan has been availed.

    In case of Death of the Owner: When the owner of the bike dies, the buyer has to submit the following documents while transferring an RC of the bike:
  • A notice of transfer has been provided under Form 30. This form must be filled appropriately with the accurate details of the bike including the chassis inscription of the bike.
  • A form for transfer of ownership of a vehicle in case of death of the seller has been given under Form 31.
  • TCA form intimating the transfer by the buyer and TCR form intimating the transfer by the seller.
  • Death Certificate of the Seller.
  • Succession Certificate, NOC from the financial institution, an affidavit from the previous owner (if any) are also needed.

    In case of the auction of the bike: When the bike is auctioned, the buyer has to submit the following documents while transferring an RC of the bike:
  • Application for the transfer of ownership of the bike when the bike is bought at a public auction has been given under Form 32.
  • Certificate or order that confirms the sale of the bike in the favor of the buyer and must be duly signed by the person authorized to conduct the auction.
  • Copy of order from the Central Government or State Government authorizing the auction of the bike.
  • Other documents will be the same as required in the case of a standard purchase.

What is the fee for the transfer of RC of a bike online?

You have to pay Rs. 150 for the transfer of ownership of a motorcycle online as per rule 55(2)(iii), 55(3), 56(2)(a), and 57(1) of Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989.

Other points to be kept in mind

  • The application for the transfer of RC of a bike must be made in the state where the bike is registered.
  • It is mandatory to have the RC of a bike and must carry a hard copy or a soft copy of the RC while driving. Failing to do so, you will be levied a fine of Rs. 5,000/- for the first offence and Rs. 10,000/- for the subsequent offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
  • If you lose your RC anywhere, then you can also apply for the duplicate RC by filing an FIR to the nearest police station and filing Form 26.
