RC or registration certificate is an authorized document acting as proof of ownership of your car/ vehicle. It indicates that your vehicle is registered with the government of India in accordance with the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, 1988.
It details the geographical boundary within which the vehicle can be used. Apart from having a drivers license for driving a vehicle, it is equally important to have a registration certificate.
The validity of a vehicle registration certificate is 10 or 15 years from the date of issuance. It can be renewed for 5 years after the date of expiry except some Indian States/ UT.
One can also opt for a temporary registration certificate which is valid for one month from the date of issue. It however cannot be renewed.
When you sell your car it becomes mandatory to transfer the ownership of the car to the name of the buyer. This process includes transferring the Registration Certificate. When the car is being sold purposely by the owner to the buyer, the ownership also needs to be transferred simultaneously. For the same, the transferor shall report the same in Form 29 to the concerned authorities in whose jurisdiction the transfer is taking place.
RC transfer online- within the same state: Within 14 days of the transfer of car, application for transfer of ownership must be filed by the transferee in Form 30. It should be submitted to the registering authorities. It should be accompanied by documents stated under form 1.
RC transfer online- in a different state: Within 45 days of the transfer of the car, application for transfer of ownership must be filed by the transferee in Form 30. It should be submitted to the registering authorities. it should be accompanied by documents stated under form 1 and form 2.

In the case of the death of the owner, the transfer of ownership is affected by the legal heir of the deceased. When the owner dies the person succeeding has to report the demise of the owner to the concerned authorities within the time frame of 30 days. The legal heir also needs to report his intention to use the car under his possession. The maximum period for the same is 3 months.
Form 31 should be filed to the registering authority within the period of 3 months to transfer ownership of the vehicle in your name along with Documents-
In the case of selling of car through a public auction conducted by the central or state governments, the ownership and registration get transferred to the buyer. The purchaser needs to file form 32 within 30 days of acquiring the car to the registering authority.

Step 1: Visit the parivahan website. check into online services and then Vehicle Related Services. then register yourself- this will help to track the status of your RC transfer
Step 2: Log in-Enter details like in Vehicle Registration Number, State and Last 5 Digits of Chassis number. then proceed.
Step 3: Select Transfer of ownership Service
The Seller needs to apply for transfer of RC in favour of the buyer by entering details of the vehicle and the new owner along with an insurance certificate. In case of an active loan confirmation regarding possession of RTO form 35 and Bank NOC need to be given as well
Step 4: Upload documents
Step 5: Pay fees. Fees will be around Rs 530. The fees breakup is-
Transfer of ownership: Rs 300
Smart card: Rs 200
Postal Payment: Rs 50
Step 6: Print the documents along with Form 29, and 30 and get them signed by both buyer and seller. Submit in RTO department.
In the case of any problem with the signatures or documents, a letter will be sent to you by the RTO officer informing you to be present with the buyer for verification and document clarification.
